Palpitations can have many causes, which can only be determined when the palpitations are caught as they are happening.
The first step is to perform an electrocardiogram (ECG). This will give us an idea of any propensity to develop abnormal heart rhythms and if we are lucky, it will capture the exact moment of the palpitations and give us an answer.
The next step is an echocardiogram to rule out any structural heart problems which may result in abnormal heart rhythms or arrhythmias. Within our centre, we can also order one of the following tests to help us catch the palpitations:
-
- Trans-telephonic monitoring
- 24 hour Holter monitoring
- Spyder ECG monitoring
- Implantable loop recorder – usually the last resort when the palpitations are very infrequent and difficult to capture
